Grade 9 Visual Art

Prehistoric Graffiti

This piece was made on brown paper with a metrical called conte. Conte is a chalky-pastel like material that is best used in large areas because it dulls quickly and is difficult to get into corners. I used a blending stomp to get the colours i wanted into corners or my piece. Conte spreads and blends very easily. I'm personally not a fan of working on paper that isn't white, but that's because i usually don't add a background to my drawn pieces, and if I do, it is mostly white. I think it depends and what hue or background you want your pieces have.

So you're probably wondering, "what these two art genres have to do with each other? They look completely different." This is true, both these art styles produce pieces that are wildly different, but the relation between the two is less of the look of  a piece and has more to do with the process is which the piece was created. Both pieces start with line work, then added colour, and finally adding small details. I used this method, I began with line work using a black fine tip marker, then filled in with conte.

Value Shoe Drawing

Now, in all honesty, I am relatively new to the realm of value drawing so it was an inevitability that my piece would turn out to be, well, off. Now, in my piece I tried to used different techniques of shading. I used pressure shading on the heal to give it more of a glossy shine, while I used loose line shading on the main area to mimic the leathery texture of the shoe I was emulating. Finally, i used stippling for the cast shadow and background to differentiate those elements from the rest of the piece.

For this piece I used a view finder to create an interesting composition, I "zoomed in" on the heels of the shoes, so to speak. If given the chance to do it again I would probably alter the perspective so that the base of the heel was visible and more of the drop shadow was shown. i think by doing this, there would be a clearer differential between the different varieties of shading techniques.

Reduction Relief Printing

Interactive Art

For this project we made reduction relief prints with softoleum, this was my first time using this medium so it was a bit rocky. Sometimes the colours didn't turn out as full as I had wished, or the prints didn't line up the way i wanted, or excess ink ending up in places I didn't intend, which resulted in the dark streaks you can see on the lettering.

If I were to do this project again I would try to not make as much of a mess because i kept smudging ink on the edges of each of my prints. I kind of like the chaotic lines in the background, even though some where accidental, I think it really brings attention to the smoother design in the foreground.

For this project we had to create an art piece that could conduct electricity so it could interact with a sound effects program. I added conductive paint to the sky and trees of my piece, I tried to add corresponding, natural sounds, such as birds chirping, heart beats, wolves howling, native flute playing and a woman singing. The element of design I focused more on was value, from the highlights and shadows to the face and the mountains, to the darkness of the tree line separating from the sky, to the actual lights.

During the creation of this project I learned to save the paint I was using over the course of a few days using plastic wrap. I also learned that I tend to use too much paint which is something I need to work on. I had a difficult time coming up with the concept for this piece, I guess you could say I was having artist's block. I think I spent a whole work period cruising through my pintrest board called 'art to try out' looking for inspiration. I finally came across a picture of a girl with her hair splayed out, turning into the sea for boats to sail on. That gave me the idea for this piece.

Adult Colouring Page

For my ISU I chose to do an adult colouring book page with a bohemian theme, including the hand of fatima (also referred to as Hamsa hand) being the central point of the piece and a mandala surrounding it. The reason I chose the hand is because this symbol is meant to protect people from negative energy and bring happiness, while adult colouring books are meant to relieve stress which can also be seen as relieving negative energy.

This seemed like a perfect marriage of the two, plus the design is neat. I used a standard pencil, a ruler, pencil crayons, and a sharpie pen to make this piece. The measurements were difficult and even with a ruler I didn't quite get it right, but my page as a whole still turned out alright The main element of design I focused on was line, using mostly natural lines to convey a soothing tone.

The only challenge I encountered was finding the patients in order to make this piece a reality. Sometimes, finding the patience and serenity in order to create the smooth lines is hard to find in the environment I am working in.
