Grade 11 Visual Art

Printmaking

For this project we had to create a printmaking piece based on an animal. The materials used were simple softoleum blocks, black ink and printmaking paper. I was a little concerned about the subject being animals as I am not entirely comfortable drawing animals, however I pushed through anyway. I originally wanted to do a portrait of my cat DJ, however I found that I couldn't capture his essence of adorability so I decided to go with a barn owl as they are incredibly majestic. I wanted to try to create the wisps of the feathers by gently gliding the softoleum cutter and flicking it upwards. Overall I am satisfied with the finished product, however I would have liked to play with the ink saturation a little more.

Colour Wheel

For this project we had to reinterpret the colour wheel in our own way. I decided to do repeated circular renditions of a face that I commonly sketch on my schoolwork. I used simple pencil crayons and large drawing paper, along with circular stencil. I wanted to create a piece that contained a lot of colour because I wanted the transition between colours to be smooth, however it caused the piece to become just a tad too busy. While I was drawing it, the business kept tricking my eye so the proportions on some of the faces are off, especially on the lighter colours such as yellow or light blue. It was also a struggle to line up the faces with each other proportionally. Despite this, I am satisfied with the piece and I've learned to appreciate the trippy nature of it. It's almost like a magic eye poster

Straight Line Drawing

IMG_0301.JPG

For this project we had to create a portrait using only straight lines. Instead of doing the portrait with pure straight lines I decided to use words. More specifically, I used the lyrics from the song "I Want To Break Free" by Queen. The person whom I chose to do a portrait of is Roger Taylor (affectionately nicknamed Rogerina), the drummer from Queen, dressed in his drag outfit from said song's music video. I used a simple fine line sharpie pen and standard drawing paper. I personally found the proportions of his face rather challenging to capture and I personally think it's still a bit off because it does not look exactly like him but overall, I am satisfied with the finished product. It even managed to get 28 likes on instagram, which is not that many but I'm still proud of it.

Watercolour Jellyfish

For this project we had to paint a realistic jellyfish with watercolour. I started by sketching a bunch of jellyfish to get the basic shapes and overall flow of the tendrils. I have not explored watercolour as medium, so I was worried that the product would not be what I hoped. I really wanted for my jellyfish to have more neutral colours and not be quite as vibrant because I was going for a more realistic and soft approach. Not that I don't vibrant coloured jellyfish, I just wanted mine to be soft and neutral.  I think the hardest part was getting the shape and structure of the the larger centre tendril. Also, getting the soft shading in the mantel and around the jellyfish was a challenge. Overall I am very pleased with the finished product and it even managed to get 47 likes on Instagram.

Keyhole Painting

IMG_1547.jpg

For this project we had to create a painting that represented who were are on the inside through the imagery of a keyhole. I used a standard flat canvas, acrylic paints and paint markers to complete this project. I decided to to paint a representation of how I feel as a trans man in today's society and school environment. I used the keyhole to represent the inner masculinity I feel in the shell of a masculine presenting body. This project was challenging for me because once I got to the painting portion I began to have an artist's block, which delayed the painting by quite a bit. I managed to complete the whole piece in one 6-hour sitting, when I locked myself in my room while blasting sad music. I originally came up with the concept during a depressive and gender dysphoric episode, so I just started drawing a figure of myself in an attempt to cope. Personally I am much more proud of the full colour sketch I did of this piece rather than the painting, but I do still really like this painting.
