Grade 10 Visual Art

Value Portrait

For this project we had to chose a photo with a good value scale and try to draw it using the grid technique to resize the image. When enlarging an image it is important to remember to keep the ratio and scale of your drawing equal to the photo, so the drawing won't be stretched or squashed. I chose this photo in particular because it has a very up close and personal crop which I believe conveys a lot of emotion. I began by making a rough draft on thin paper and transferring it to a sturdy good copy by tapping it up to a window and tracing it. I used a variety of pencils to shade, I mostly used my 7B pencil and 4B pencil.

Clay Character Sculpture

For this project we had to create a digital sculpture and try to transfer it to clay. The 3-D modelling program is useful when you want to see how 3-D elements will look, rather than sketching out a variety of views on paper. Even though I created the 3-D model, I did alter the design slightly. Most of the design differences stemmed from my lack of experience using clay as a medium. I originally intended for the face to look much more human and less Moai-esc. Despite the difference in intention, I am pleased with the finished product. I used a lot of the slab technique for my clay because there were a lot of elements that had to be added to the basic architecture such as the mouth, nose, eyes, ears and the back of the head.

Lego Perspective Drawing

This project was a study on the usage of perspective using a more simplistic subject as opposed to one more complex. Perspective is useful when drawing realistic landscapes and structures to create realistic angles and size differences pertaining to distance of the observer. I used very simplistic watercolour techniques since I do not use watercolour enough to use more complex techniques. I did use a bit of salt in the background to add some texture. I found the ellipses on the blocks and the tree rather difficult and annoying due to their size and the amount of them.

Awesome Calligraphy

It is important to remember the small things in life, especially when looking for inspiration. For this project we were tasked to find a quote that spoke to us and write it in a style of calligraphy. The quote I chose is a line from the Pink Floyd song 'Wish You Were Here', from the album of the same

name released in 1975. I decided to use a Gothic style because it looked more pleasing to the eye, plus more challenging. The lettering process involved measuring and lightly sketching a Gothic lettering template, and then sketching the letters in pencil, and finally drawing them in with India ink. One might say, 'why not just print it out on the computer?' That is a valid argument if your'e looking for mathematical perfection, however the beauty comes from the human element. Seeing such precise lettering from a human's hand is beautifully satisfying.

Stencil Printmaking Series

During this project, I experimented a lot with different materials including watered down paints, inks and acrylics. I eventually chose to opt for stencils made of acetate, paper and glue in combination with acrylic paints to complete my series. The tree in the prints was a hot glue stencil that was painted along the back side with acrylic in order to create a ghostly positive image. I think i enjoyed working with the hot glue the most because it was very fun, but the paper stencils provided a more clear image.

ISU

For my ISU I chose to do a creative self portrait, because I wanted to test my skills on portraits even further. I used pencil crayon to colour in areas of value. I chose a colour pallet that resembles a calm sunrise because the symbol of a sunrise has very personal meaning to me. The principle of design I focused on the most in this piece was contrast, through the bright highlight and heavy shadow on the face. The challenge I encountered during this project was just how sore my wrist got from the intense shading and the fear of running out of the specific colour I needed.
